Local Government Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain is moving his voter registration from the Cumilla-3 constituency to Dhaka-10 today, November 9th.
This high-profile move comes amidst intensive seat-sharing discussions ahead of the upcoming national election and suggests he may contest the Dhaka-10 seat.
Asif Mahmud, currently registered in Cumilla-3 (Muradnagar upazila), will submit his application at the Dhanmondi thana election office to become a voter in Dhaka-10, confirmed by the Ministry of Local Government's Public Relations Officer. The deadline for changing voter location is tomorrow, November 10th. This constituency covers the areas of Dhanmondi, New Market, Kalabagan, and Hazaribagh police stations.
The move fuels speculation that Asif will resign from his government post to contest from Dhaka-10, particularly if a seat-sharing deal with the BNP is finalized. Previously, there was speculation he might run from his native Cumilla-3. The BNP has yet to name its candidate for Dhaka-10, while the Jamaat-e-Islami has nominated Jasim Uddin Sarkar.
Asif Mahmud was a prominent coordinator of the Students Against Discrimination movement that led the July Uprising and the fall of the Sheikh Hasina regime. He is noted for announcing the "complete shutdown" and advancing the final protest date. Following the uprising, he was appointed as an adviser in the interim administration for the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Youth and Sports. He has a background in student politics, having been involved with the Students' Rights Council and the Democratic Students' Power.
