Spain declared a national emergency on Thursday night as massive wildfires threaten communities near Madrid and Avila. Over 10,000 people have been evacuated from several towns including Villa del Prado and San Martin de Valdeiglesias as firefighters struggle to control the blazes.

The Spanish Interior Ministry initiated the emergency response due to multiple simultaneous fires, adverse weather conditions, and the need to mobilize extensive public resources. This marks the first time Spain has invoked its National Civil Protection System law for a wildfire, placing the interior minister in direct control of coordinating the response.

Currently, more than 270 emergency personnel and 40 ground units, alongside the Military Emergency Unit, are battling the flames. Madrid's regional government requested immediate assistance, describing the situation as one of "extreme gravity," with active fires potentially advancing beyond their current extinguishing capacity.

Scientists link the increasing severity of southern Europe's wildfires to climate change. Extreme summer heat has dried out abundant vegetation grown during unusually heavy spring rains, creating highly flammable conditions. In 2026 alone, wildfires in Spain have burned over 100,000 hectares—roughly equal to the country's average annual burn area over the last decade. Tragically, the blazes have claimed 13 lives so far, making this one of Spain’s deadliest wildfire seasons in recent decades.
