Outgoing UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer traveled to Kyiv on Thursday for his final official visit to Ukraine before leaving office. During talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky, Starmer delivered a clear message Britain's commitment to Ukraine will remain steadfast under his successor Andy Burnham.
"Our cast-iron support for Ukraine will always endure," Starmer said in a statement. Reinforcing this promise, Britain joined the European Union's €90 billion ($103 billion) support loan for Ukraine on Monday.
While Starmer announced his resignation on June 22 following a drop in domestic popularity over policy U-turns, he remains highly regarded by global leaders. Throughout his tenure, he has championed Ukraine's defense and NATO initiatives. Notably, he has worked closely with French President Emmanuel Macron to spearhead efforts for a potential peacekeeping force designed to deter future Russian aggression.
Andy Burnham is set to become the leader of the ruling Labour Party on Friday and will officially take office as Prime Minister on Monday following an audience with King Charles III. Burnham will be the United Kingdom’s fifth leader since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
