A series of powerful explosions rocked the Iranian capital, Tehran, early Monday (June 8), amid rapidly escalating tensions between Iran and Israel. Iranian state media reported that air defense systems were activated across the capital to counter incoming attacks.
The intense exchange of fire has renewed fears of a broader conflict spreading across the Middle East. Iran’s state broadcaster, IRIB, confirmed that explosions were heard in western Tehran. Meanwhile, local media outlet Khabar Fouri reported on Telegram that air defenses were also engaged in the western city of Kermanshah.
The latest escalation began Sunday when Israeli airstrikes targeted the Lebanese capital, Beirut, violating an ongoing ceasefire. In retaliation, Iran fired a barrage of missiles at northern Israel, prompting Israel to respond with multiple airstrikes on Iranian territory.
The region has remained highly volatile since the United States and Israel launched joint airstrikes on Iran in late February. Those initial strikes triggered Iranian retaliation against Israel and other regional nations hosting U.S. military bases.Although a temporary ceasefire was reached on April 8, peace talks have since stalled due to disputes over its implementation and shifting regional politics.
