Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has formally requested a high-level meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump to address the most contentious aspects of a potential peace deal with Russia.
The appeal follows recent high-stakes negotiations in Miami, where U.S. and Ukrainian delegations refined a foundational framework aimed at ending the conflict.
Negotiations have shifted from an initial 28-point proposal to a more streamlined 20-point "foundational document." Zelenskiy described this as a political roadmap involving Ukraine, the U.S., Europe, and Russia.
Under the current draft, Ukraine would maintain its army at its current strength of 800,000 personnel, supported by security guarantees from a "Coalition of the Willing."
Parallel documents are being finalized regarding post-war investment and the rebuilding of Ukraine’s infrastructure.
Despite progress on security and reconstruction, the "sensitive issues" of land control remain unresolved the Kyiv proposes a ceasefire at current battle lines ("to remain where we are"). Moscow continues to demand a full Ukrainian withdrawal from the Donetsk region.
Washington is reportedly exploring the creation of demilitarized zones or free economic zones to bridge the gap.
Zelenskiy noted that the fate of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant remains a major sticking point, with Ukraine suggesting a small economic zone for the area.
The President warned that if an agreement on current positions cannot be reached, the only remaining options are a continuation of the war or a complex decision regarding various potential economic zones.
