16 Dead in Escalating Russia-Ukraine Strikes as Diplomacy Stalls

As the war between Russia and Ukraine enters its fifth summer violence is escalating alongside stalled diplomatic efforts. Over the weekend strikes from both sides claimed at least 16 lives across the region.

In southern Ukraine's Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia region, a strike on the coastal village of Kyrylivka killed eight people including two children, and wounded 14 others. Meanwhile a Russian "double-tap" drone strike targeted a private courier service in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, leaving three drivers dead. Additional casualties included two in southern Ukraine two in Russian border areas and one in occupied Kherson.

With US-led peace negotiations currently deadlocked, Ukraine has expanded its reach deep into Russian territory to disrupt military logistics and force negotiations. Ukrainian drones struck an oil refinery in Siberia's Tyumen region—over 1,000 miles from Moscow—causing a fire.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also confirmed a strike on a weapons component factory in Kirov where a previous attack killed five workers. Further west in Yekaterinburg Russian retail giant Wildberries evacuated a major logistics center following a drone attack that caused a fire but no casualties.

Ukraine maintains these deep strikes are justified retaliation for more than four years of relentless Russian bombardments on its cities.
