Two people were killed after a small aircraft crashed at Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport in San Diego, California, on Monday evening.
The accident occurred at approximately 5:20 p.m. local time on September 7. Preliminary reports indicate that the aircraft was a small Cessna plane. Witnesses said the aircraft crashed onto the runway and caught fire shortly afterward.
According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, around 30 firefighters and emergency personnel responded to the scene to conduct firefighting and rescue operations. Both occupants of the aircraft died at the scene.
The San Diego Police Department said it received a report of the crash at approximately 5:21 p.m. and officers responded to Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport in Kearny Mesa. The circumstances surrounding the crash were not immediately clear.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is expected to investigate the cause of the accident.
The incident came just two days after another fatal plane crash near Fresno, California, in which all four people aboard were killed. The victims were identified as flight instructor Dana Ede, 41, her husband Craig, 44, and their two sons, Pavel, 10, and Remus, 13.
