At least five people were killed and five injured when an Amazon Prime Air cargo plane overran a runway and crashed at Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon.
Flight 7598, operated by 21 Air on behalf of Amazon, overran the airport's diagonal runway around 2 p.m. local time and struck several vehicles on the ground as officials said. Three of the injured are in critical condition. Miami-Dade Fire Chief Ray Jadallah said the pilot and co-pilot were trapped inside the plane, while two people were trapped in struck vehicles.
More than 60 rescue units and around 200 personnel responded. Crews battled an active fuel leak into the evening. The airport suspended all flights briefly; two of its four runways reopened by Sunday evening.
The aircraft, a 32-year-old Boeing 767-300 freighter had departed from San Juan, Puerto Rico. It previously served as a passenger jet from 1994 to 2015, according to Flightradar24 which said the plane was travelling at 112 knots when it left the runway.
Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava confirmed the deaths and injuries, offering condolences to affected families. 21 Air said it was "devastated" by the crash and extended condolences to victims' families.
The National Transportation Safety Board has sent a team, led by Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy to investigate. The FAA is also investigating and issued a ground stop for inbound flights. Amazon said it is working with authorities to determine the cause.
This is not the first fatal crash involving an Amazon-linked cargo plane. In 2019, an Atlas Air Boeing 767 operating for Amazon crashed near Houston also killing all three aboard.
