Three tourists have died after being swept away by strong waves while bathing in the sea at the Himchhari point of Cox’s Bazar beach. Two others remain missing. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon (October 21) on the beach near the museum at Marina Resort in Himchhari. The victims were part of a 12-member group visiting Cox’s Bazar from the Diabari area of Uttara, Dhaka. Five friends from the group entered the sea to bathe and were suddenly caught in a strong current. The three deceased tourists are Md. Borhan (23), Saiful Islam (23), and Nafisul Haque (22) all from the Diabari area of Uttara, Dhaka. Their bodies are currently being held at the morgue of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.
Ramu Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Zillur Rahman, describing the incident, stated that a group of tourists had gone into the sea to bathe when they were suddenly caught by powerful waves and swept away by the current. Local residents managed to rescue one person alive and sent him to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital. Subsequently, the bodies of three individuals were recovered from the scene. A search operation is currently underway in the sea to locate the two missing persons.
Meanwhile, AK Fazlul Haque, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ramu Police Station, stated that efforts are ongoing to confirm the precise details regarding the victims and those missing. He noted that the names, identities, and specific addresses in Diabari, Dhaka, have been preliminarily established. "We have contacted their families," he said. "Once the relatives arrive in Cox’s Bazar, we will seek permission from the District Magistrate to hand over the bodies without an autopsy, following the completion of necessary legal procedures." Nishad Angela, Additional Superintendent of Police for the Tourist Police (Cox’s Bazar Region), stated that a Tourist Police team joined the rescue operations immediately upon receiving the report. The police are currently working to verify the identities of those rescued and those still missing, determine their places of origin, and notify their families. Our rescue personnel are actively working on the beach alongside the Fire Service and the Coast Guard. A joint search operation by the Fire Service, Coast Guard, and lifeguards is still underway at sea to locate the two remaining missing tourists. However, the rescue efforts are being hampered by strong sea waves and darkness.
