A mosquito eradication and waste removal campaign was held in Paikgachha, Khulna, to prevent the spread of dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases.
The initiative was jointly launched by the Paikgachha Municipality and the international development organization BRAC on Wednesday afternoon.
Paikgachha Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Wasiuzzaman Chowdhury and Municipal Executive Officer Lalu Sardar led the campaign alongside BRAC representatives, municipal staff, and local residents.
Participants cleaned up municipal roads, clogged drains, and garbage dumping spots to destroy potential breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes. This was followed by a public awareness drive.
"With the monsoon season here, the risk of dengue and chikungunya rises significantly," said Municipal Executive Officer Lalu Sardar. "Aedes mosquitoes breed rapidly in stagnant clean water found in yards, roofs, flower pots, abandoned tires, and drums. We must eliminate these sources to protect public health."
Public health experts have urged increased caution as dengue and chikungunya cases rise across Bangladesh, leading to hospitalizations and fatalities.
UNO Wasiuzzaman Chowdhury emphasized that administrative action alone is not enough. "To make this program successful, every citizen must keep their surroundings clean. Make sure water does not stagnate anywhere for more than three days. Only an aware community can prevent these diseases."
Local residents welcomed the timely initiative and urged the authorities to run such cleanliness campaigns regularly.
