Police have arrested a youth, Sajal Khan, for allegedly killing Nilufa Yasmin, a woman in her fifties, in Jhalakathi. Sajal is reportedly a friend of the deceased’s son. The murder is suspected to have been committed for gold ornaments worn by Nilufa.
After the arrest on Sunday night, police recovered the deceased’s nose and ear ornaments and her mobile phone from Sajal’s possession.
Locals protested outside the Superintendent of Police’s office late Sunday, demanding exemplary punishment for the accused. On Monday, January 26, family members and local residents formed a human chain in front of the Jhalakathi Press Club to protest the killing.
The body of Nilufa Yasmin was found on the banks of the Sugandha River in the Jhalakathi Paurkheyaghat area at 6:00am on January 20. The post-mortem report indicated blood stains on her nose, supporting suspicions that she was killed for her gold ornaments.
Jhalakathi Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Imtiaz Ahmed said that Sajal’s initial interrogation revealed his involvement in the murder. Police confirmed the recovery of the deceased’s nose ring, earrings, and mobile phone from Sajal’s home. Further legal action is underway.
