Prime Minister Tarique Rahman emphasized on Sunday that the Bangladesh Armed Forces are a national institution dedicated to protecting state sovereignty, asserting they must remain free from the influence of any individual, party, or family.
Speaking at a military "durbar" at Dhaka Cantonment, the Prime Minister stressed that professionalism and security are the military's primary mandates. "The main responsibility of the army is to protect the country's independence. No political influence or internal division is acceptable in the execution of this duty," he stated.
Reflecting on past challenges, the Prime Minister noted that previous attempts were made to weaken and politicize the military. He specifically cited the Peelkhana massacre as a pivotal moment that damaged the institution, followed by subsequent efforts to drag the force into controversy.
The PM praised the army’s conduct during recent periods of transition, particularly following the events of August 5, 2024. Looking forward, he called for even greater transparency and professionalism, especially during critical national events and future elections.
PM Tarique Rahman also highlighted the legacy of martyred President Ziaur Rahman in modernizing the force, urging personnel to maintain the spirit of patriotism established during that era. "A unified armed force ensures that no one can defeat Bangladesh," he added.
The Prime Minister lauded the military's role in UN Peacekeeping Missions, noting that Bangladesh’s international reputation reached new heights during BNP-led administrations.
Concluding his address, he reaffirmed his government's commitment to the "July Charter," promising comprehensive reforms not only within the military but across all state sectors to ensure public-centric development.
