


The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested retired Lieutenant Colonel Md. Afzal Naser, a former director of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), from Mirpur DOHS on Sunday.
DB Joint Commissioner Mohammad Nasirul Islam confirmed the arrest of the 61-year-old former officer.
According to DB sources, Naser was apprehended based on information obtained during the interrogation of retired Lieutenant General Masud Uddin Chowdhury and retired Lieutenant General Sheikh Mamun Khaled, both of whom are currently in custody.
Afzal Naser, originally from Senbagh, Noakhali, commissioned into the army in 1984. He served in the DGFI between March 2006 and March 2008. His name has surfaced repeatedly in connection with the alleged torture of political leaders, including current Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, during the 2007–2008 emergency period (widely known as the 1/11 era). Naser also faces a murder charge filed at the Bhatara Police Station regarding an incident in July.
Masud Uddin Chowdhury Arrested last Monday and currently under a second round of remand (six days) following an initial five-day stint. Sheikh Mamun Khaled Arrested last Wednesday and placed on a five-day remand in connection with a murder case filed at Mirpur Police Station.
All three former officers are currently being interrogated in DB custody.
