A closing scientific seminar of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) Internship Program-I was held in Gazipur, bringing together veterinary students, professionals, livestock officials and representatives of various organizations to exchange practical knowledge and field-level experiences.

Speakers at the seminar emphasized the importance of animal health protection, disease prevention and control, safe animal-source food production, and the development of skilled veterinarians to support modern livestock management.

The seminar was held on Wednesday, October 14, at the District Parishad Hall under the initiative of the Gazipur Sadar Upazila Livestock Office and Veterinary Hospital. The event marked the completion of the DVM Internship Program-I (INT-531), Autumn Term 2025, for final-year students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science at Gazipur Agricultural University.

The seminar was chaired by Dr. Mohammad Shaheen Mia, Upazila Livestock Officer of Gazipur Sadar. Among those present were Dr. Harunur Rashid, Veterinary Surgeon, and Dr. Fauzia Ferdous, Additional District Livestock Officer of Gazipur.

Invited guests included Dr. Shafiul Ahad Sardar Swapan, convener of the Bangladesh Veterinary Association (BVA); Dr. Rezaul Karim Mia, president of Vet Executive; Dr. Alamin, general secretary of Vet Executive; Dr. Md. Tafazzal Hossain Diplu, managing director of Pinnacle Agro; Dr. Md. Khalequzzaman, chief executive officer of Bio Innova Limited; and Dr. Md. Imran Hasan Lincoln, consultant at ACDI/VOCA.

Also attending were Md. Shahidul Islam, president of the Gazipur chapter of the Bangladesh Poultry Farmers Association, and Md. Masudul Karim Munayem, general secretary of the Gazipur chapter of the Bangladesh Dairy Farmers Association.

Livestock department officials present at the event included Dr. Md. Mostafizur Rahman, District Livestock Officer of Gazipur; DTO Dr. Md. Selim Ullah; DD (AI) Dr. A. J. M. Salauddin; and Dr. Kazi Alamgir Hossain, Upazila Livestock Officer of Gazipur Sadar. Teachers, veterinarians, institutional representatives and participating internship students also attended the seminar.

Importance of Field Experience in Veterinary Education The seminar featured discussions on the practical application of veterinary education, animal health protection, disease prevention and control, and various aspects of modern livestock management. Speakers highlighted the importance of gaining hands-on field experience, improving professional skills and effectively applying theoretical knowledge acquired through academic studies.

They said that classroom education alone was not sufficient to develop competent and responsible veterinarians. Practical experience in the field, alongside formal academic training, was essential for preparing graduates to address real-world challenges in the livestock sector.

The speakers also stressed that veterinarians play a vital role in ensuring safe animal-source food production, promoting animal welfare, protecting public health and supporting the sustainable development of the country's livestock sector.

They noted that newly qualified veterinarians must acquire modern knowledge and practical skills to identify animal diseases, implement preventive measures, improve farm management and ensure quality veterinary services.

The speakers expressed hope that scientific seminars of this kind would create opportunities for students to exchange knowledge and experiences while strengthening their professional competence, sense of responsibility and ability to make practical, evidence-based decisions.

They further expressed optimism that the experience gained through the internship program would help improve veterinary services and enable future veterinarians to contribute effectively to the sustainable advancement of Bangladesh's livestock sector.
