Social media platform X has suspended more than 13,000 accounts tied to foreign influence operations and targeted US “political conversation” originating from Iran, China and Russia.
The platform’s Global Government Affairs team stated that these covert networks used inauthentic profiles to post and amplify political content targeting candidates and public figures across the political spectrum. The company did not disclose the specific number of accounts linked to each nation.
X’s Safety team noted that proactive detection methods were used to enforce its Authenticity Policy which targets both spam networks and foreign entities conducting influence operations. The crackdown comes as social media companies step up efforts to protect political discourse ahead of upcoming US elections.
