Detective Branch (DB) police in Pabna have arrested three people, including a woman accused of masterminding a kidnapping after luring a man into a romantic trap, and rescued the victim. The suspects allegedly demanded Tk 50,000 in ransom. Police also seized a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw allegedly used in the abduction and recovered money taken from the victim.
The information was disclosed in a press release issued by the district’s Detective Branch on Wednesday night, October 14.
According to police, the victim was asked to meet someone at Shapla Plastic Mor in Pabna town around midday on Wednesday. He was allegedly forced into a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw and held against his will, while the kidnappers demanded Tk 50,000 from his family for his release.
The arrested suspects are Poly Khatun of the Purba Kayemkola area of Pabna town; her husband, Jamal Hossain, 43; and Ukil Sardar, 43, of the Mahadebpur area.
Police said the victim, Md Karibur, left home for Pabna town around 10am on Wednesday to have his mobile phone repaired. At around 1pm, he called his son from his son’s mobile phone and said he had been lured to Shapla Plastic Mor and forcibly detained. He told his family that the kidnappers were demanding Tk 50,000 and threatening to kill him if the money was not paid.
After learning of his father’s abduction, Md Kamrul Mondol, 26, searched several places for him. Unable to find his father, he filed a complaint with Pabna Sadar Police Station.
Acting on information gathered through technology and confidential sources, a DB police team conducted an operation in the Sripur Bazar area under Pabna police jurisdiction and rescued Karibur. Two suspects were arrested during the operation. Police recovered Tk 4,000 belonging to the victim and seized a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw allegedly used in the kidnapping.
In subsequent operations, police arrested Poly Khatun, who is accused of being the main planner behind the incident.
The DB press release said preliminary questioning indicated that Karibur had been drawn into a romantic trap through mobile phone conversations with Poly over approximately 15 days. Following the alleged plan, he was asked to meet at Shapla Plastic Mor on Wednesday.
According to police, accomplices waiting at the location forcibly put him into a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw and took him to different places. At one point, they obtained a phone number from a bKash shop in Sripur Bazar and pressured the victim to arrange a money transfer from his family. Police said he was also threatened and intimidated.
Pabna DB Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdus Salam said the victim was rescued and all three suspects were arrested through a swift operation based on technological assistance and confidential information. Legal action has been taken against the arrested individuals in connection with a case filed at Pabna Sadar Police Station.
