Israeli and U.S. forces launched a wave of massive airstrikes across the Iranian capital early Monday, hitting several high-profile targets including the Sharif University of Technology.
The strikes, which began in the early hours of April 6, caused significant damage to the university’s Information Technology Center and its mosque. Following an attack on a nearby gas station, authorities in Tehran’s 9th district confirmed that gas supplies to the Sharif area have been temporarily suspended for safety.
Visuals from western Tehran show thick plumes of smoke rising over the city skyline. Local reports indicate that the aerial campaign was not limited to the capital; residents in Borojerd reported warplanes flying at low altitudes around 1:00 AM, describing the engine noise as "five times louder" than usual. Similar reports of explosions and aircraft activity emerged from Shiraz and the holy city of Qom, where local officials confirmed a strike on a residential area.
This escalation follows weeks of conflict that has seen several academic institutions, including Shahid Beheshti University, targeted.
The military action coincides with a sharp rise in global oil prices following a stark ultimatum from U.S. President Donald Trump. In a recent social media post, President Trump warned that Iranian infrastructure faces total destruction by Tuesday if a deal is not reached.
While the U.S. President suggested to Fox News that a deal could be possible by Monday, Iranian officials have consistently denied that any formal negotiations with the United States are taking place.
