Local business leaders are urging the government to allow shopping malls and markets in Chittagong to remain open until 9 PM to help offset severe financial losses.
Currently, markets are required to close by 7 PM as part of a national fuel-saving initiative. During a courtesy meeting on June 3 at the World Trade Center, traders proposed shifting their operating hours from 10 AM–7 PM to 12 PM–9 PM, noting that customer foot traffic typically peaks in the evening.
The early closures have led to a sharp drop in sales, making it difficult for shop owners to cover rent, electricity bills, employee salaries, and bank loan installments. Additionally, business leaders called for an end to tax harassment and requested the reintroduction of a package VAT system.
The appeal was made to the newly elected Board of Directors of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI). Chamber Senior Vice President Md. Amjad Hossain Chowdhury, who presided over the meeting, assured traders that the Chamber would act as a bridge and raise the extended hours proposal with the government.
CCCI Vice President Mohammad Mosiul Alam Swapan also emphasized the critical role of traders in funding national development through tax and VAT contributions, urging the government to prioritize their challenges.
The meeting was moderated by Chamber Director Asad Iftekhar and attended by key representatives from major commercial hubs, including the Bangladesh Shop Owners Association, Tamakumundi Lane Merchants Association, Bipani Bitan, Finlay South City, Sanmar Ocean City, Mimi Supermarket, and several others.
