At least five children have died after a floating bridge collapsed over the Brahmaputra River in Dewanganj upazila of Jamalpur on Eid day.

The accident occurred on Saturday afternoon in front of Dewanganj Police Station when a large crowd gathered on the bridge. Witnesses said the structure gave way under excessive pressure throwing many people into the river.

Most managed to swim ashore but several children went missing.

Fire Service personnel rushed to the scene and launched a rescue operation. By around 9pm, all five missing bodies were recovered and confirming the death toll.

The victims include Mayamani (10), Abdul Motaleb (6), Khadija (12), Abir Hossain, and another child whose identity was later confirmed by local authorities.

Local residents said the bridge had been in poor condition for nearly a year. A tea vendor near the river claimed it frequently became overcrowded and unsafe.

Family members of the victims expressed grief and anger, alleging negligence. One relative said the tragedy could have been avoided if the bridge had been properly maintained.

Member of Parliament M Rashiduzzaman Millat visited the site and assured that affected families would receive assistance. He also said steps would be taken to construct a permanent bridge in the area.

Jamalpur Fire Service official Sheikh Rabiul Islam Akand confirmed that all missing persons had been recovered and no one else remains unaccounted for.

The incident has raised concerns over public safety and infrastructure management during major public gatherings.
