Allegations have emerged over the filling of part of a pond at Government Rajendra College in Faridpur and the construction of permanent structures on the site.
College authorities claim that a group of individuals, including activists linked to Chhatra Dal, have started the work during the Eid holidays. They have sought urgent intervention from the administration to protect the pond and the college environment.
A visit to the site on Wednesday afternoon found soil being dumped on a section of the pond near the Bir Muktijoddha Naufel Gate. Work was also underway to install RCC pillars, with several big pits already dug and workers present.
Those involved claim the construction is being carried out on land leased from Faridpur Municipality. They showed documents indicating leases granted in 2011 and 2012 to two Local individuals.
One of the organisers, Kazi Shibli Sadiq, said the work is being done legally on leased land and denied encroaching on college property.
However, College Principal SM Abdul Halim alleged that parts of the college land and pond are being occupied. He said the construction could permanently damage the beauty of the campus and called for immediate administrative action.
Faridpur Municipal Administrator Md. Sohrab Hossain said officials have been sent to the site. He confirmed that work has been asked to stop temporarily, and further action will be taken after investigate of the lease documents following Eid.
