The trial for the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif has officially commenced at the Chattogram Speedy Trial Tribunal. On Wednesday, the court scheduled January 19 for the formal framing of charges.
Judge Md. Zahidul Haque issued the order after reviewing case documents and confirming the presence of 22 out of 23 detained accused. Security was significantly tightened around the court premises as the hearing took place.
Chinmoy Krishna Das, named as a primary accused in the charge sheet, was notably absent. Assistant Public Prosecutor Md. Raihanul Wazed Chowdhury explained that prison authorities did not present him due to security concerns.
During the proceedings, several accused requested legal representation and improved security. The judge assured them that the state would facilitate the appointment of defense lawyers if they were unable to secure their own. The court emphasized that all individuals currently remain "accused" and their legal status would depend on the evidence presented during the trial.
Advocate Saiful Islam Alif was killed on November 26, 2024, during a clash near the court building following the bail rejection of Chinmoy Krishna Das. A total of 39 individuals have been implicated in the police charge sheet.
