Recently, a stir has started surrounding the statement of a district BNP leader regarding the closure of student politics at Faridpur Medical College (FMC). The BNP leader held a press conference regarding this. In the press conference, district BNP joint convener Syed Zulfikar Hossain Jewel called the activities of the general students under the banner of the college a secret organization and the principal an ally of the Awami League. He also mentioned in the press conference that if student politics is stopped in the college, their existence will disappear.
Syed Zulfikar Hossain Jewel said this at a press conference at the Faridpur Press Club on Tuesday afternoon. Earlier, on January 11, this BNP leader spoke at a prayer meeting organized by the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) district branch in the college hall to pray for the forgiveness of the soul of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. In that speech, he expressed disappointment over the students' attendance and criticized the ban on student politics and warned the college administration.
In that speech, he said, "We want to see it till the 12th (February 12). If we are not allowed to be physically present here after the 12th and practice normal politics here, then there will be a terrible situation. If my nationalist Chhatra Dal cannot do politics, I will stop politics in this Faridpur Medical College. If student politics is stopped, this medical college will be closed."
Later, when his statement was spread on social media, he held a press conference in the face of criticism. At that time, he claimed that a misinterpretation had been spread and apologized for it. At the press conference, he said, "Even though quite some time has passed since the beginning of that prayer program, the hall is mostly empty. Then I drew the attention of the leaders and college authorities and said, "There are many supporters of the nationalist party here, so where are they?" Then I came to know that student politics is stopped here. Even if student politics is stopped, there is no issue of student politics here." The death of Begum Khaleda Zia has been mourned statewide. Why didn't the students come on a day of mourning? Then I came to know that there are threats, that if you want to stay in the medical college, you can't be in any BNP-related program. In the context of which I spoke, my words may be wrong, only people make mistakes.
At that time, he mentioned that the principal of the medical college is running a secret organization in the name of Awami League friends and ordinary students, and said that the Academic Council has issued an order in the name of stopping student politics. The members of this Academic Council are friends of fascism and are still leading.
In addition, he demanded the introduction of student politics and said, 'When the practice of student politics has started in educational institutions across the country, elections are being held. Then why has student politics been stopped in Faridpur Medical College.
At that time, DAB district branch convener Mostafizur Rahman Shamim, District Jubo Dal general secretary Md. Jahangir Hossain, District Volunteer Party Convener Mozammel Hossain Mithu and other BNP leaders were present.
