Authorities in Nalchiti have seized a massive haul of 450 sacks of potatoes found abandoned on a riverbank. The unclaimed produce was discovered on the land of a local resident near the Kalijira canal in Khaokhir village.
According to local residents, an unidentified trawler arrived at the canal bank on Wednesday night. A group of people unloaded the sacks onto the property of Monir Talukdar before the vessel departed. Initially, locals assumed the goods belonged to a buyer; however, suspicion grew when no one returned to claim the cargo after four days.
Mintu Khan, a member of the Magar Union Parishad (UP), was alerted to the situation on Sunday. Upon failing to locate an owner, he notified the Nalchiti Police Station.
Police arrived on Sunday afternoon and officially seized the 450 sacks. The potatoes have been placed under the temporary custody of Magar UP Acting Chairman Md. Jamal Hossain.
Md. Ashraf Ali, OC (Investigation) of Nalchiti Police Station, confirmed that the origin of the potatoes remains a mystery. The police are currently preparing a report for the higher administration to determine the next legal steps, which may include a public auction or further investigation into potential smuggling or hoarding.
