Bangladesh has requested India to fast-track the extradition process of convicted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman disclosed on Monday.

Speaking at a press briefing at the Foreign Ministry following a meeting between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi at the Secretariat, the Foreign Minister shared key details of the discussions.

" The extradition of Sheikh Hasina was brought up during today’s meeting. We urged them to expedite the process, and we remain optimistic that India will respond positively," Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman said.

He further noted that Bangladesh has also called for the extradition of those involved in the murder of Suman Hadi, adding that all necessary documents requested by Indian authorities regarding the matter have been duly provided.

Addressing queries regarding a potential visit by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to India, the Foreign Minister clarified that no official decision has been taken yet.

He highlighted that India extended an invitation to Tarique Rahman for the upcoming BRICS summit in his capacity as the BIMSTEC Chairperson, rather than solely as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

Referring to the press conference held by Sheikh Hasina who has been sentenced to death for crimes against humanity in Delhi on August 5, the Foreign Minister stated that Bangladesh's strong objection was reiterated.

"We have clearly conveyed our firm stance regarding the convicted offender. The Indian authorities have understood the gravity of the matter with due importance," Minister Rahman added, emphasizing the necessity of fostering an appropriate environment to move bilateral relations forward.
