Morocco overcame early scares to defeat Haiti 4-2 in a thrilling World Cup match in Atlanta on Wednesday, though they narrowly missed out on Group C's top spot to Brazil on goal difference.
Finishing second, Morocco will now head to Monterrey for a Round of 32 clash on Monday, where they are likely to face either the Netherlands or Japan.
A Historic Start for Haiti Haiti, making their first World Cup appearance since 1974, ended a 52-year goal drought just 10 minutes into the match. Lenny Joseph flicked Jean-Kevin Duverne’s cross into the net via a deflection off Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to give Les Grenadiers a shock lead.
Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi quickly equalized, tapping the ball over the line after goalkeeper Johny Placide parried an initial strike. However, Haiti spectacularly retook the lead just four minutes later when Wilson Isidor pounced on a loose ball and fired a long-range shot into the top corner.
Visibly frustrated by the defensive lapses, Morocco regrouped and leveled the score before half-time. Ismael Saibari calmly finished Hakimi’s low cross, marking his third goal of the tournament.
Second-Half Substitutes Seal the Win With Brazil cruising past Scotland in Miami, Morocco knew they needed a massive victory to win the group. In the second half, head coach Mohamed Ouahbi turned to his bench, and his substitutes delivered.
An emotional Soufiane Rahimi broke the deadlock, giving Morocco the lead with a powerful, deflected effort. Rahimi then turned provider, stealing possession on the by-line to set up Gessime Yassine, who rolled the ball into an empty net to round off the scoring at 4-2.
Haitian Pride Despite Exit Despite exiting the tournament without a point following earlier losses to Scotland and Brazil, Haiti’s performances brought immense pride to a nation gripped by hardship. Thousands of Haitian expats in Atlanta offered deafening support for every attack.
"Today we scored two goals, and we are really proud of it. But it is still frustrating because we didn't get a point," said Isidor. "With the generation we have, I am confident we are going to be here again to win Haiti's first point in a World Cup."
Hakimi Remains Focused Hakimi, named player of the match, continued to lead his team on the pitch despite facing ongoing legal controversies in France. The reigning African Footballer of the Year stated he remains focused on the tournament.
"I am in a very good moment, personally and professionally," Hakimi said post-match. "I have good people around me that help me concentrate on the most important thing. This is one of the most important moments of my career, and I hope to continue like this."
