A masterful captain’s knock by Najmul Hossain Shanto propelled Bangladesh to a dominant 301 for 4 at the close of Day 1 in the Mirpur Test. Shanto’s 101, combined with a gritty 91 from Mominul Haque, ensured the hosts controlled all three sessions after Pakistan won the toss and elected to bowl.
The decision to bowl first on a grassy surface initially favored Pakistan. Bangladesh’s openers fell cheaply, leaving the side reeling at 31 for 2. Shaheen Afridi and Mohammad Abbas exploited the early moisture, removing Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Shadman Islam respectively.
However, the momentum shifted as Shanto and Mominul anchored the innings. The pair shared a massive 170-run partnership for the third wicket, successfully nullifying Pakistan’s three-man pace attack. Shanto was particularly aggressive, driving with precision through the offside, while Mominul used his trademark late cut to disrupt Shan Masood’s field settings.
Shanto reached his ninth Test century with a boundary through cover, but fell the very next delivery. Mohammad Abbas trapped him LBW after a successful review showed the ball hitting the top of middle stump.
Mominul continued to lead the charge but narrowly missed out on his own century, falling for 91 after being trapped LBW by Noman Ali. Despite the loss of the two set batters, veteran Mushfiqur Rahim (48*) and Litton Das (unbeaten) safely navigated a late burst with the new ball.
Day 1 Summary
Bangladesh’s disciplined approach saw them score exactly 101, 100, and 100 runs in each of the three sessions. With a solid foundation of 301 on the board and six wickets in hand, the Tigers head into Day 2 in a position of significant strength.
