Prime Minister Tarique Rahman assured Parliament on Wednesday that the government is compiling an accurate and credible list of Bangladesh’s martyred and genuine freedom fighters.
Responding to concerns about fraudulent entries made for political gain, the Prime Minister confirmed that an expert committee from the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs is actively reviewing the registry to identify and remove fake names.
During the session, lawmaker Mohammad Ruhul Amin Dulal highlighted that political activists were previously enlisted as freedom fighters under past governments, allowing them to wrongly claim the Tk 20,000 monthly state allowance. Addressing this, PM Rahman acknowledged that post-independence listing efforts were deeply compromised by partisan interests and lacked impartiality.
In response to lawmaker Md. Anwarul Islam’s query regarding the failure to finalize a definitive list over five decades after independence, the Prime Minister stressed the current administration's commitment to conducting thorough field-level verifications. Past lists are now being heavily scrutinized to right historical wrongs.
“Our goal is to present the nation with a transparent and credible list where there will be no place for fake names,” Rahman stated, assuring the House that genuine heroes will finally receive the honor and recognition they truly deserve.
