The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has extended the deadline for submitting online income tax returns under the fourth phase. Taxpayers can now file returns until March 31.
The decision was announced on Thursday through a press release signed by NBR official Ekramul Haque.
According to the release, the extension has been granted under the Income Tax Act, 2023, with government approval and in the public interest. The revised deadline applies to general individual taxpayers and Hindu undivided family (HUF) taxpayers for the 2025–26 tax year.
Earlier, the NBR extended the online return deadline several times due to low participation in the e-return system. The first phase was extended until December, the second until January 31, and the third until February 28. Under the law, the original deadline for filing returns was November 30.
The NBR said the extensions were necessary as the online filing system did not receive an adequate response despite repeated deadline revisions.
According to official data, Bangladesh currently has around 1.23 crore registered taxpayers. Of them, about 38,000 have submitted returns online, while nearly three lakh have filed paper returns. Around 81 lakh taxpayers are yet to submit their returns. Last year, a total of 45 lakh tax returns were filed.
