A Dhaka court has barred two former vice-chancellors of National University from leaving the country amid ongoing investigations into alleged irregularities and corruption.
The travel ban applies to Harun-or-Rashid and Md Moshiur Rahman. Sabbir Faiz, Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge, issued the order on Tuesday (February 24) following a petition by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Riaz Hossain, assistant to the relevant court bench, confirmed the order.
On behalf of the ACC, Deputy Director Muhammad Joynal Abedin sought the restriction, citing an ongoing probe by a three-member investigation team. The petition said there were concerns the accused might attempt to leave the country, which could hinder a proper investigation.
Harun-or-Rashid, a former professor of political science at University of Dhaka, was appointed vice-chancellor of the National University on March 6, 2013. He was reappointed in 2017 after a four-year gap.
He was later succeeded by Md Moshiur Rahman, who has academic affiliations with both the University of Dhaka and University of Chittagong.
The investigation into the allegations is continuing.
