A holiday motorcycle ride ended in tragedy after a woman and her young daughter were killed in a road accident on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Sitakunda.
The accident took place around 8pm on Friday (May 15) near the BMA Gate area of Bhatiari Union.
The deceased were identified as Tarin Akhter, 28, an office assistant at the Chittagong Divisional Commissioner’s Office, and her 22-month-old daughter, Yasha.
According to Sitakunda Assistant Commissioner (Land) Abdullah Al Mamun, Tarin was returning to Chittagong city with her husband Zakaria Nayan and their daughter after visiting Bhatiari. Zakaria was riding the motorcycle, with the child seated between the couple.
Citing local residents, the official said the child suddenly began to fall from the motorcycle. While trying to save her daughter, Tarin also fell onto the road. A covered van coming from behind ran over Tarin, killing her on the spot.
The child was rescued by locals and taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where doctors later declared her dead.
The official also said that amid the confusion following the accident, someone at the scene stole Tarin’s vanity bag. The bag reportedly contained cash, a mobile phone, gold ornaments and important documents.
