Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has stepped in to support Muslima, the orphaned daughter of truck driver Hannan Sheikh, who was killed in a mob lynching fueled by Facebook rumors.
On Tuesday morning, Boalmari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) SM Rakibul Hasan visited Muslima at her grandparents' home in Satair village. Acting on directives from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the UNO assured the family that the state would oversee the child's upbringing and welfare.
During the visit, the UNO provided immediate assistance, including cash, food, and toys. Local Union Parishad Chairman Rafiul Alam Mintu also pledged continuous support from the local council.
"After the tragic death of Hannan Sheikh gained national attention, the Prime Minister’s Office instructed us to take full responsibility for his daughter's expenses," said UNO Rakibul Hasan.
The tragedy occurred on Friday evening, May 1, in Nagarkanda Upazila. After Hannan's truck was involved in an accident, a false rumor spread on social media claiming he had "crushed 20 people." An angry mob blocked the highway and brutally lynched Hannan. He was later pronounced dead at Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
