Lakshmipur District Superintendent of Police Md. Abu Tarek said that accused Md. Rubel (41) set fire to the district election office over a contract of 10,000 taka.

On Friday (December 26) afternoon, the Superintendent of Police confirmed this information to the media personnel by holding a press briefing in the conference room of his office.

Accused Rubel is the son of the late Abdul Has of Majupur village, Lakshmipur Municipality (Ward No. 10) and the elder brother of former Sadar Upazila Chhatra League leader Abdul Aziz Hakim.

The Superintendent of Police said that accused Rubel set fire to the election office in exchange for 10,000 taka on the orders of late former MP Shahjahan Kamal (MP) APS Shishul Chakraborty. 2,000 taka was paid before the fire. Shimul Chakraborty paid 8,000 taka of the contract after the fire. Besides, his younger brother Abdul Aziz Hakim lost his job at the electricity office because he joined the Chhatra League. Due to long-term unemployment, the accused Rubel set fire to the district election office out of greed. A smart team of detective police conducted a raid and arrested him from his house. When taken to court on Friday (today), Rubel confessed to setting fire. He was later sent to jail.

A masked youth set fire to the Lakshmipur district election office on the night of the 12th. The police collected the office's CCTV footage and started an investigation. After that, the police identified the accused Rubel at some stage.
