A village police member in Santhia Upazila of Pabna district, who had been unwilling to keep his mother with him and provide for her, has finally agreed to take responsibility for her care following court intervention. He also admitted his mistake and apologised to his mother and the people of the country.
The dispute was resolved on Sunday afternoon, October 11, after the mother and son gave their statements at the magistrate court for Santhia Police Station under the Pabna Chief Judicial Magistrate Court.
The son, Sagar Hossain, serves as a village police member under Nagdemra Union Parishad in Santhia Upazila. Earlier, news that he had been reluctant to keep his mother with him and support her had spread on social media after the family went to the office of the Santhia Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) over the matter.
The incident drew widespread discussion and criticism after a video of the episode circulated on October 8. After the matter came to the court’s attention, it took suo motu action. On Sunday afternoon, Santhia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Anisur Rahman was instructed to bring the son and his mother before the court. The OC subsequently took them there in his own vehicle.
The court heard statements from both the mother and son and took steps to resolve their dispute. Sagar Hossain then agreed to take responsibility for his mother’s maintenance.
Realising his mistake, Sagar expressed remorse for his behaviour towards his mother. He said he would never treat her that way again and apologised to both his mother and the people of the country.
Anisur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Santhia Police Station, said the elderly woman and her son had been taken home together. He added that police were continuing to maintain regular contact with them and check on the situation.
