The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday declared the nomination of Tasnim Jara, a former leader of the National Citizen Party (NCP), valid for the Dhaka-9 constituency. She will now contest the upcoming general election as an independent candidate.

The decision was announced during the first day of appeal hearings held at the EC auditorium in Agargaon. Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, alongside four other commissioners, presided over the session.

Tasnim Jara’s candidacy was initially rejected on January 3 by Dhaka Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Md Rezaul Karim during the primary scrutiny phase. She filed an appeal against the decision on January 5.

Following the favorable ruling, Jara expressed her gratitude to well-wishers, noting that the rejection had caused significant disappointment among her supporters. "The past week has been a long journey, but I am now ready to contest as an independent," she stated.

The EC began processing 645 appeals today, with approximately 70 cases scheduled for the opening session. The hearing process is set to continue through January 18.
