The Election Commission (EC) is set to hold internal discussions to form an official opinion regarding the proposal to hold the next parliamentary election and the referendum on the July Charter on the same day in February.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin stated on Thursday that the EC needs to be formally informed of the proposal before taking a stance. He noted that he had not yet had the chance to hear Chief Adviser (CA) Muhammad Yunus’s televised address, which contained the announcement.
The CEC confirmed that once the matter is formally received, the Commission will "exercise our options and discuss it in the commission to arrive at an opinion."
Nasir Uddin concluded that without knowing the exact details of the proposal, it would be inappropriate to comment at this moment.
Earlier on Thursday, CA Muhammad Yunus announced in a national address that both the 13th parliamentary elections and the referendum on implementing the July Charter's constitutional reforms would be held concurrently in the first half of February next year.
