EC Forms Committee to Simplify National ID Correction Process

Bangladesh’s Election Commission (EC) has formed a four-member committee to make the process of correcting National Identity Cards (NIDs) easier and faster.

The initiative is aimed at reviewing the documents submitted with NID correction applications and identifying ways to streamline their processing.

The information was disclosed in a letter signed Sunday by Habiba Akhter, assistant director of the EC’s NID division.

According to the letter, the committee will review supporting documents submitted by applicants and recommend measures to improve the overall process.

The director of Registration and Expatriate Services of the NID division will serve as the committee’s convener. The other members are the deputy director of Registration and Expatriate Services, the assistant director of the Printing and Distribution Unit, and the assistant director of Correction and Replacement, who will serve as member secretary.

The committee has been assigned several responsibilities, including:

  • Classifying the types of changes requested by applicants and preparing a list of documents required to support each type of correction.
  • Recommending how to process applications that were previously rejected for insufficient documentation but were later resubmitted with adequate evidence.
  • Suggesting measures to speed up the processing of applications.
  • Reviewing whether modifications to the CMS portal are needed to resolve technical difficulties encountered during electronic processing.
  • Recommending guidelines for justifying the locking, unlocking and rollback of NID records.

The move comes as the EC continues to manage NID services for a large voter population.

According to the latest voter-list update, Bangladesh has 128,323,240 registered voters. Of them, 65,212,731 are men, 63,109,266 are women and 1,243 are third-gender voters.
