Home Affairs Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has called for expanded United Nations support for Bangladeshi peacekeepers and police personnel. During high-level meetings in New York on Monday, the Minister reaffirmed the nation's long-standing commitment to global peace operations.
In a meeting with UN Under-Secretary-General Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Ahmed requested the expedited verification of Rapid Deployment Level (RDL) status for Bangladeshi Formed Police Units (FPUs). He also advocated for more individual police deployments and urged the UN to appoint more Bangladeshi officers to senior leadership and professional roles within UN Headquarters and field missions. Lacroix commended Bangladesh’s proactive role in multilateral diplomacy and its readiness to provide highly trained personnel.
The Minister also met with UN Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support Atul Khare to discuss logistical requirements for specialized police deployments to Haiti. This included talks on equipment, shipping, and reimbursement. Khare praised Bangladesh's peacebuilding efforts and assured the UN’s continued operational support.
Bangladesh remains a top contributor to UN peacekeeping, and these discussions aim to strengthen its influence and presence in global security missions.
