President Donald Trump hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at Mar-a-Lago on Sunday, declaring that Ukraine and Russia are “closer than ever before” to a peace deal.
The meeting followed an extensive phone call between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, signaling a high-stakes diplomatic push to end the nearly four-year-old conflict. A "90% Ready" Proposal: Negotiators have been trading drafts of a 20-point peace plan. Zelenskyy indicated the framework is nearly complete, though sensitive issues remain.
Security Guarantees: A major breakthrough involves the U.S. offering Ukraine security guarantees similar to NATO’s Article 5. In exchange, Zelenskyy signaled a willingness to drop Ukraine’s bid for full NATO membership.
The Donbas Deadlock: The future of the Donbas region remains the most significant "thorny issue." While Trump expressed optimism, Russia has demanded the area be recognized as its territory, while Ukraine has proposed a demilitarized zone monitored by international forces.6
International Involvement: Following their private talks, the leaders held a joint call with European heads of state, including leaders from the UK, France, Germany, and Poland. A follow-up summit involving European leaders is being planned for January in Washington.
Despite the optimistic tone, Trump cautioned that the deal could still break down within weeks over "one item" that remains unresolved. Putin continues to demand that Ukraine limit its military size and grant official status to the Russian language. Meanwhile, Russia continues its military strikes on Ukrainian targets even as diplomatic talks intensify.
Trump concluded by stating that a definitive answer on the success of these peace talks would likely emerge within the next few weeks.
