Authorities in Sirajganj seized and destroyed a large quantity of adulterated fish and shrimps during a drive at the city’s Station Market on Wednesday evening.
A monitoring team led by the Sadar Upazila Fisheries Department found 4.5 kg of stinging catfish (shing mach) treated with harmful industrial dyes and 4 kg of shrimps injected with jelly to increase their weight.
Md. Amjad Hossain, Assistant Fisheries Officer of Sirajganj Sadar Upazila, confirmed that the seized items were destroyed in public by pouring fuel over them to prevent any further health risks to consumers.
"The dyes used on the fish and the jelly injected into the shrimps are extremely harmful to the human body," Hossain said. "We conducted this drive as part of our regular market monitoring to ensure public safety. Such operations will continue to stop the sale of adulterated food."
The drive was conducted by a team including Assistant Fisheries Officer (Project) Jewel Rana and other officials from the district and upazila fisheries offices.
