At least seven people have reportedly died in a fire at TupTup Resort on Marine Drive in Cox’s Bazar, with authorities warning that the death toll could rise.
The fire broke out on Saturday morning, October 17. Preliminary information suggests that an electrical short circuit at the resort may have triggered the blaze.
Resort in-charge Md Suman told Star News that the fire started due to a short circuit. Staff immediately tried to extinguish it, but the resort’s air-conditioning units and cylinders subsequently exploded, causing the fire to spread throughout the property, he said.
The identities of those killed had not been confirmed immediately. They were believed to be tourists, according to the initial report.
Three people suffering burn injuries were rescued and taken to hospital. The Fire Service said two people had been rescued alive, with burns covering 30% of their bodies.
Following reports of the fire, two Fire Service units rushed to the scene. The agency warned that the number of fatalities could increase.
