FIFA has fined the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) $20,000 following anti-Muslim chants by supporters during an international friendly match against Egypt in Barcelona.
The ruling confirmed by FIFA's appeals body follows discriminatory chants heard in the 10th and 47th minutes of the 0-0 draw held at Espanyol’s stadium on March 31.
In addition to the monetary fine, FIFA ordered a partial stadium closure for Spain’s next home friendly match likely taking place in 2027 or 2028. At least 15 percent of the venue’s capacity must either remain closed or be allocated exclusively to educational, family and anti-discrimination groups.
The incident drew sharp criticism from Spain winger Lamine Yamal. Yamal who is Muslim condemned the behaviour as "disrespectful and intolerable" writing on social media that using religion as a taunt demonstrates ignorance and racism.
FIFA disciplinary judges noted that severe penalties were warranted while acknowledging that this was a first offense for the Spanish federation. Officials praised Spanish authorities for implementing preventive measures also acting promptly during the match, publicly condemning the chants and cooperating to identify the individuals involved.
