Paikgachha Upazila Nationalist Ulama Party Member Secretary Shafiqul Islam was seriously injured after being beaten by rivals in Khulna’s Paikgachha.

The attack took place on Thursday evening (March 5) in front of the Shanta Paschim Para Jame Mosque after Iftar. Family members later took him to the Paikgachha Upazila Health Complex, where he is currently receiving treatment.

Shafiqul Islam said he has been serving as the upazila member secretary of the Ulama Party and previously worked as the president of the Garikhali Union Jubo Dal. According to him, the attack may be linked to a recent dispute over the lease of the Garikhali Hat.

He alleged that after leaving the mosque following Iftar for Maghrib prayers, local resident Shah Alam and his brother Hamid suddenly attacked him.

“Before I could react, they struck my head and legs with iron rods. I fell to the ground,” Shafiqul Islam said from his hospital bed.

His wife, Tuhina Khatun, said he suffered heavy bleeding at the scene. Doctors at the health complex stitched several wounds on his head. She also said his left leg and left eye were injured in the attack.

After hearing the news, Paikgachha Upazila BNP Convener Dr. Md. Abdul Majid and Paikgachha Municipal BNP President Aslam Parvez visited the hospital on Friday morning to see the injured leader.

Family members said they were preparing to file a case over the incident at the time of reporting.
