


A writ petition has been filed in the High Court seeking a declaration of the ‘July National Charter’ as illegal and unconstitutional. At the same time, the writ also seeks a direction to suspend the validity of the charter.
On Wednesday (February 18), Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Yunus Ali Akand filed the writ in public interest in the relevant branch of the High Court. He said that the writ petition may be heard in a High Court bench headed by Chief Justice Razik Al Jalil next week.
The writ petition has made the Cabinet Secretary, the Secretary of the Law Ministry, the National Consensus Commission, the Chief Election Commissioner and other concerned persons as respondents in the writ.
Meanwhile, a writ was filed in the High Court on February 17, challenging the validity of the referendum held on February 12 and seeking to annul the results of the referendum on February 13. Supreme Court lawyer ABM Ataul Majid Touhid filed the writ in public interest.
The Chief Election Commissioner, Cabinet Secretary, and Law Ministry Secretary were made respondents in the writ petition.
The 'Yes' vote for the change was won in the referendum held on February 12. The total voter turnout in this nationwide referendum was 60.26 percent.
48 million 74 thousand 429 voters voted 'Yes' in the referendum. On the other hand, 22 million 565 thousand 627 people voted 'No'.
