A methane gas explosion at a coal mine in southern Pakistan has claimed the lives of at least 34 workers. The fatal blast tore through the mine near Quetta the capital of Balochistan province on Thursday.

According to a Friday morning statement from the provincial disaster management authority rescue teams have recovered 34 bodies so far. However the casualty toll may rise. A joint rescue operation which began immediately following the explosion and continued through the night is still underway to locate an unspecified number of trapped miners.

Fatal mining accidents remain tragically common in Pakistan, with Balochistan being particularly vulnerable. Despite being the nation's largest province by landmass and rich in natural resources Balochistan is Pakistan's poorest region. It consistently lags behind the rest of the country in critical development indices including economic growth employment and education.

As emergency teams race against time to find the remaining workers this incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety protocols and better oversight within the region's high-risk mining sector.
