Gazipur’s garment sector saw a rare calm this Eid, as workers received full salaries and bonuses on time without any protests or unrest.
Officials said this is the first time in over a decade that payments were completed smoothly across the district, allowing workers to return to their villages for Eid celebrations without disruption.
Superintendent of Industrial Police Md. Amjad Hossain said that in previous years, delayed payments often triggered protests, blockades, and factory unrest. This year, however, 100 percent of workers received their dues before Eid.
A garment worker, Habibur Rahman, said timely payment of wages and bonuses in his factory and nearby units has brought relief. “We can celebrate Eid with our families without worry,” he said.
According to industrial police data, there are 2,834 factories in Gazipur, including 770 under BGMEA, 147 under BKMEA, 136 under BTMEA, and 1,781 subcontracting and other factories.
Authorities credited coordinated efforts by the government, factory owners, and law enforcement agencies for ensuring timely payments and maintaining stability in the sector.
