An Eid day outing turned tragic when an 18-year-old motorcyclist was killed and his friend critically injured in a head-on collision with a passenger bus in Narail’s Lohagara upazila.
The fatal accident occurred at around 3:00 PM on Thursday at the Ala Munshi intersection on the Kalna-Jashore-Benapole highway.
The deceased was identified as Sabbir Gazi, 18, son of Babul Gazi. The injured passenger, Shawkat Hossain, 19, son of Ripon Gazi, remains in critical condition. Both victims were residents of Dighlia village under Abhaynagar upazila in neighboring Jashore district.
According to local residents and eyewitnesses, Sabbir and Shawkat had traveled on a motorcycle from Jashore to Narail on Thursday afternoon to visit the landmark Kalna Madhumati Bridge for the Eid holidays.
The collision occurred during their return journey. As their motorcycle reached the Ala Munshi intersection, it collided head-on with a speeding passenger bus traveling from the opposite direction toward Kalna.
Local residents rushed to the scene, rescued the two heavily bleeding teenagers, and evacuated them to the Lohagara Upazila Health Complex. The on-duty emergency physician declared Sabbir dead on arrival. Given the severity of his head trauma, the critically injured Shawkat was immediately transferred to Dhaka for advanced life-support treatment.
Inspector (Investigation) Ajit Kumar Roy of the Lohagara Police Station confirmed the casualty figures and stated that a police team was immediately deployed to secure the highway crash site.
"We have taken physical custody of the deceased teenager's body at the hospital morgue," Inspector Roy said. "The body will be formally handed over to the grieving family members once all mandatory legal requirements and post-mortem procedures are completed. An active investigation is underway to track down the bus involved."
