A truck driver was left in critical condition after being severely hacked by miscreants in Narail's Lohagara upazila on Thursday night.
The attack occurred around 8:30 pm near the Dhopadah Sluice Gate in Kashipur Union. The victim, 36-year-old Rahim Sikder, is originally from Chachoi village and currently resides with his family in Lohagara town's Poddarpara.
According to locals and family members, the violence stemmed from an altercation earlier that morning. Rahim’s 13-year-old son, Swaib, was reportedly slapped by an alleged local juvenile gang leader named Azim Sheikh.
Seeking an explanation, Rahim and his son, accompanied by a few others, approached Azim at the Sluice Gate area that night. The confrontation quickly escalated. An armed group, reportedly led by Azim, attacked Rahim with sharp weapons and iron rods, inflicting severe injuries to his head, torso, and limbs.
Locals quickly rescued Rahim and rushed him to the Lohagara Upazila Health Complex. Following primary treatment, duty doctors referred him to Dhaka due to the critical nature of his injuries.
Locally, Rahim has also drawn attention recently for making controversial and offensive posts on Facebook directed at various professionals, including government officials and journalists. It is unclear if this history played any secondary role in the hostility.
Lohagara Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Ajit Kumar Roy confirmed that police have visited the crime scene. "We are actively investigating the incident to identify and arrest those involved," he stated.
