Robi Completes 4G Network Modernisation in Chattogram Region

Robi Axiata PLC has successfully completed its 4G network modernisation programme in the Chattogram region, marking the completion of the company’s nationwide network transformation initiative.

The final phase of the large-scale modernisation programme covered the Chattogram, Cumilla and Noakhali regions. Through the initiative, Robi aims to establish a stronger, more reliable and future-ready “Giga Green” 4G and 5G-ready network across the country.

The announcement was made at an event titled “Celebrating Robi’s 4G Network Modernisation in Chattogram” at the Mohona Hall of Radisson Blu Chattogram Bay View on Sunday, October 4.

Under the network modernisation programme, more than 3,500 sites across Chattogram, Cumilla and Noakhali were upgraded within just 180 days.

The company said customers experienced almost no disruption to services during the process.

Following the modernisation, customers’ 4G experience has improved by up to 20% on average, while an additional 10% of the population has gained access to improved indoor 4G coverage.

The use of advanced MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technology has further strengthened signal quality and coverage, helping provide customers with a more seamless and improved connectivity experience.

The upgraded network infrastructure has also reduced electricity consumption by up to 12%. According to Robi, this will support efforts to reduce carbon emissions and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

At the event, Member of Parliament Abu Sufian said Chattogram has an emotional connection with Robi and described it as the company’s birthplace. He said Robi had remained competitive and was moving forward by using technology.

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Chairman Major General (retd) Md Emdad Ul Bari said completing network modernisation on such a large scale within a short period was a significant engineering achievement.

He said Robi’s investment in improving connectivity would further strengthen Bangladesh’s telecommunications sector.

The BTRC chairman said mobile networks initially began with 2G, when towers were installed relatively far apart. With the introduction of 4G and the growing use of the internet and video services, network modernisation became necessary.

“Connectivity is what we need to build a digital world,” he said, adding that Robi was playing an important role in this area.

Chattogram Development Authority Chairman Engineer Belayet Hossain said he had a longstanding relationship with Robi. He expressed hope that improvements in service quality would help the company strengthen its position in the competitive market and expand its services to people across the region.

Robi Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Ziad Sattar said completing the network modernisation in the Chattogram region marked the successful conclusion of the company’s nationwide network transformation programme.

He described the achievement as more than a technological milestone, saying it was an important step toward ensuring a high-quality digital experience for customers across Bangladesh.

“After successfully modernising more than 4,800 sites in greater Dhaka recently, this achievement in the Chattogram region has taken our journey toward network excellence another step forward,” he said.

Popular model and actor Adil Hossain Noble, Chattogram City Corporation Chief Executive Officer and Secretary Mohammad Ashraful Amin, business leader SM Abu Tayeb and others joined the guests during the cake-cutting ceremony.

Recently, Robi completed what it described as the largest and fastest network transformation project in its history by modernising more than 4,800 sites in greater Dhaka.

The initiative resulted in customer experience improvements of up to 125% in different clusters, a 20% reduction in call-drop rates and up to threefold improvement in indoor network experience for nearly half of its customers.

Robi said the successful completion of its nationwide network modernisation programme further reinforces its commitment to building Bangladesh’s digital future.

Robi Axiata PLC is a publicly listed company in which Malaysia-based Axiata Group Berhad, one of Asia’s major telecommunications companies, holds a majority stake of 61.82%. Public shareholders hold 10%, while Bharti Airtel of India holds 28.18%.

Robi is Bangladesh’s second-largest mobile phone operator and continues to introduce new digital services for customers. The company has invested in building telecommunications infrastructure across the country to expand innovative services to people in every region.

The nationwide infrastructure supports the delivery of digital products and services while contributing to the growth of the country’s digital ecosystem.
