Nine more children died with measles-like symptoms in the 24 hours leading up to 8:00 am on Sunday with bringing the country’s combined tally of confirmed and suspected measles-related deaths to 1,096 this year.
According to the daily health bulletin from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) all nine latest fatalities were classified as suspected measles cases with four deaths recorded in the Dhaka division alone. This brings the overall count of suspected measles deaths to 995 while lab-confirmed deaths stand at 101.
Over the same 24-hour period the authorities reported 1,228 new suspected cases and 113 laboratory-confirmed infections nationwide. Total suspected cases have risen to 188,041 with confirmed infections exceeding 21,000.
Hospitalizations remain high across the country. In the last 24 hours hundreds of patients were admitted to hospitals across several divisions, including 442 in Dhaka 338 in Chittagong 153 in Sylhet 127 in Barisal and 122 each in Mymensingh and Khulna.
DGHS data reveals that since March 15 a total of 166,310 patients with suspected measles have been admitted to hospitals nationwide. Of these 159,519 patients have successfully recovered and been discharged. Health officials continue to monitor hospital capacity as public health interventions proceed to curb the spread.
