Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claims to have struck and destroyed a United States unmanned surface vessel in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
In a recent dispatch IRGC Navy stated it targeted a US "Saildrone-type" vessel identifying it by hull number 5838. The Iranian paramilitary force claimed the US deployed these unmanned ships into the region to avoid direct confrontation with Iranian forces with describing the drone's mission as "aggressive."
Furthermore, the IRGC issued a strong warning, declaring that the Strait of Hormuz is currently "blocked and under its smart control and intelligence dominance." The guard corps stated it would target any hostile military presence in the critical global waterway.
Simultaneously United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported a separate but related incident also noting that projectiles struck two vessels off the coast of Oman. While it remains unconfirmed if the Oman incident is directly tied to the IRGC's operations overlapping events highlight rapidly escalating maritime risks.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most vital maritime chokepoints for global oil supplies. These latest confrontations raise immediate concerns about the safety of international commercial shipping and the potential for wider military escalation in the region.
